Many boat owners, for one reason or another, choose to store their boats away for long periods of time. If you choose to go this route, it’s important that you properly prepare your watercraft before you put it away. Otherwise, it can suffer from corrosion or other forms of damage. If you’re not sure how to get your boat ready for storage, use this guide from the experts at Tommy’s Boats.

Select the Right Storage Location

Your first step will be to find a secure, protected place to store your boat. Some people choose to store their boats at home, though whether this is a viable option for you will depend upon your living situation and the size of your vessel. Many boat owners choose to rent space in a storage facility. Keep in mind that while indoor facilities offer the most protection, you can also store your boat outdoors if you have a good cover.

Prepare Your Boat for Storage

If you want to prevent your boat from being damaged while in storage, you need to get it ready. Drain away any water and flush out the engine to prevent corrosion. Then, wash the boat using a manufacturer-approved cleaning solution. Remove any belongings or other small items from the watercraft, and then add fuel stabilizer to the tank. Finally, put the cover over your boat.

Check the Electrical System

Your boat’s electrical system is particularly vulnerable to damage if the vessel is stored for long periods of time. Before you put the watercraft away, make sure that everything has been turned off and remove the battery. The battery itself should be stored in a dry location and kept well charged until it is time for reinstallation.

Check the Trailer

If you plan to keep your boat on its trailer while it’s in storage, you should make sure that its tires are well-inflated and out of the sun. As always, be sure that the boat is securely strapped to its trailer before you attempt to transport the vessel.

Schedule Periodic Visits

We recommend checking up on your stored vessel every once in a while. Use this visit as an opportunity to lubricate the boat’s bearings and make sure that the boat’s cover is still intact. These occasional inspections will help you catch potential problems before they occur.
